What is a Record Producer?

A Record Producer is a person who can bring the production of a music project to completion at the right budget, the right time and the right quality.

A Producer is first and foremost a project manager. Not all producers are musicians but all producers are project managers. Being a musician can help but some of the most successful producers were not actual musicians but they had an appreciation of music and understood the business of selling music.

The producer is the bridge between the musical artist and the business of music.

What is required?

To be successful as a producer you have to be analytical. You have to be able to listen to a song that is popular and ask yourself the question, “why is that popular?”, “What is it about that song that makes it work?”. A questioning mind and the habit of observation are some of the important tools of the successful producer.

There is also the habit of networking. Getting the names of as many persons in the music industry as possible. Knowing all the studios, musicians and engineers who can make the music sound a special way. This is not necessarily being charming, funny or the life of the party. This is the ability to generate trust in others. It is communicating that you are discrete and that you can be depended on to do what you say you are going to do. This results in you having a list of contacts that you can use for a wide range of musical projects.

Then there is the ability to be organized. Maintaining a calendar for appointments and being on time. Being able to track the time commitments of others and remind them of where they need to be and when. Being able to keep track of money received and money spent either in a simple notebook, spreadsheet or accounting program.

Avant Academy of Music will be offering a production program that will teach the basics of making music with samples and MIDI sequences. The private lessons on piano, bass, and drums will give you the basics of what music is and how it is put together.

These will not be enough to enter a career in production but it will be a start. To go further in production there are online classes at colleges such as Berklee online and local programs like MTI out of the CPTC or Music Business Technology Trainers.

Learn an instrument, start researching the music business and get involved in making music and running projects of any sort. Put on a concert, do some fundraising. There are production programs available overseas.
