Everyone who can speak can learn to use a singing voice,
— Joanne Rutkowski, Professor of Music Education

Many of us sing and even get compliments for our effort. Having talent is good, though not all of us have it. There are times however, we would like to know what we are doing when we are singing. We would like this knowledge for two reasons:

  • So that we can improve our vocal performance over time

  • Be confident when leading other singers

The group lessons on the fundamentals of singing aim to bridge the gap for beginning singers from singing naturally to singing with knowledge and technique.

Method

  • Students will be taught to understand how the voice works, the various mechanisms of the voice, and the terms to describe them.

  • The effective use of the various aspects of the vocal mechanism for singing will be demonstrated and trained through vocal exercises.

  • Students will have songs to study to present to the class for their review and discussion

  • The class will explore areas such as singing in harmony, conducting techniques, and song selection.

The entire program is covered over three terms. A new competency is acquired by each term. A competency framework is provided so that the student can monitor their progress in the program.
