Who is a musical performer?

Having a career as a performer can be quite rewarding. Performers get to do the brave thing of being on a stage, sharing themselves, connecting with others and being paid to do so. In addition to the thrill of being a performer, there is the possibility of having many adventures, becoming famous and even becoming rich. In Jamaica, we refer to performers as being “Artists” and this is often a way of making the distinction that some performers record their music primarily rather than perform live in person. There are programs in performance available locally and abroad.

Do you have what it takes?

To be a performer you need what is referred to as a “product” or a “package”. This is what you present to the public is such an organized way that persons or companies are willing and able to pay for it.

This product or package will have several components, a list of songs, a story, production requirements, production script, a style (or a “look”) and recordings in various media such as photographs, videos, interviews, and songs. In today’s online world the package may also include a website, social media pages, and apps along with any other technological advancement currently being used by persons who love to engage with performers.

To be truly successful as a performer you need engagement, talent, and skill.  Engagement is the ability to develop and sustain a long term relationship with an audience. Musical talent can be thought of as being able to play a musical instrument or sing without having to try very hard. Musical skill is different from talent in that it is developed over a longer time with organisation, patience, and discipline.

There are many ways to acquire the abilities of engagement and skill. You will need to understand what your talent is and how to maximize it.

There are programs available to develop your abilities and discover your talents. Colleges, Online, and self-learning are options to consider.
