On Sunday, July 5 Avant Academy of Music will be doing a live broadcast on the social media platform, Facebook to showcase the talents and creativity of its music mentors. This will be streamed live from the facilities of Avant Academy of Music on Paddington Terrace where the school has operated from for the past seven years.

This “Sunday Jamminz” as it has been coined, is part of an entire program of restructuring that the school has been undergoing even before the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic. Managing Director, Seretse Small, who has been a practicing professional musician for almost 40 years has been working to take the school in a new direction since 2017.

The first step in restructuring strategy was to redefine the company as a Social Enterprise with a mission for increasing inclusivity in the Jamaican society by certifying unattached youths through the external exams. The next step was to restructure the business in its Human Resources and Operations by hiring managers and instituting more robust systems.

The most recent change was to lay off half of the teaching staff to focus on the development of online music teaching. The pandemic came just in time to accelerate processes that were already being put in place by almost a year.

The performance on Sunday is part and parcel of continuing work that Seretse is doing to deepen the experience of the selected music mentors. His intention is to give the experience of playing at an international level. He is giving them some of the experiences and guidance that allowed him to travel the world as a performer between the late 1980’s to early 2000’s.

Sunday Jamminz will begin at 5:00 pm on Sunday, July 5 and will last for a little over an hour. Go to the Avant Academy of Music facebook page to join the live feed or click here.

Sunday Jamminz will feature performances by Seretse Small on electric guitar, Kwanzi Mowatt and Otienno Coleman on Keyboards, Mujahid Dawes and Odane Thomas on Drums and Davian Barnett on Bass Guitar.
