Attending a music college can make a significant difference when you are pursuing a career in music.

The hours or practice, the facilities, and relationships you form are often a once in a lifetime opportunity.

For this reason making the decision to attend a music college must be done thoughtfully in order to make the most of it.

Unlike other countries like the USA and parts of Europe, Jamaica does not have a strong tradition of having strong music programs at the primary and secondary levels of education to prepare students to be ready to apply to a music college.

College Requirements

To enter most music colleges you will need three basic things:

  1. Meet their academic requirements (CSEC etc)

  2. Complete a successful audition

  3. Satisfy their music theory requirements

Avant Academy of Music can assist you with the last two requirements. The audition and music theory.

The Audition

Most auditions will ask for 2 to 3 contrasting pieces either done in person or by video.

For international auditions, you should aim for a grade 8 level performance standard

For Edna Manley College you can audition at a grade 4 or 5 level performance standard.

Music Theory

For most colleges, a grade 5 or 6 level of music theory is required for entry to the first year of study. At the Edna Manley College, if you do not have a grade 5 or 6 level of theory going in, you will have to do a foundation year before entering the first year.

Private Lessons

Our private lessons can be used to prepare, both for the audition and the music theory requirements. The good thing about our private lessons is that you can learn at your own pace.

Depending on your level of readiness you should prepare for 1 - 3 years of private lessons to prepare for entry to Edna Manley College. A little longer if you planning to study abroad.

Of course, the intensity of your practice can make all the difference.
